Contour Next versus OneTouch Verio Reflect comparison after 3 months
My posted review of my BG experiment on AmazonUpdated November 24, 2025In 2025, and before, I had been using the OneTouch Verio Reflex meter and test strips. But then this summer I received the following message from UnitedHealthcare.The OneTouch® blood glucose meter and test strips will no longer be covered by your UnitedHealthcare Medicare plan starting August 3, 2025. If you use OneTouch products, talk to your provider about getting a prescription for one of the options covered by your plan, many of which have a $0 out-of-pocket cost.Covered diabetes testing supplies.Contour® Plus Blue meter, Contour® Next Gen meter, Contour® Next One meter, and Contour® Next EZ meter.Contour® Plus test strips and Contour® Next test strips.I looked on Amazon and found that seemingly the only test strips available were for the Contour® Next Gen meter, so I ordered it. On August 25 I received an Ascensia CONTOUR NEXT GEN Blood Glucose Monitoring System – All-in-One Kit for Diabetes with Glucose Monitor and 20 Test Strips For Blood Sugar & Glucose Testing.Since I still had test strips from OneTouch I decided to compare readings from both meters. I am currently taking four readings a day, two with each meter upon waking up in the morning, and two more in the afternoon before our late lunch/early dinner, with different fingers.Currently for 14 days, 27 readings, my OneTouch meter reports an average of 146 mg/dL while the Contour Next has an average of 156 mg/dL. I’ll continue taking simultaneous readings as long as I have OneTouch strips, for more than 50 days. We are having our Wellness visit in November, so I’ll find out which meter had better results.The only negative I have on the Contour Next meter is that the Bluetooth isn’t on consistently, only when it syncs to the cloud. The OneTouch was always connected when the app was open. I’m storing my results on the Apple Health app.Update: Monday, November 24BG Experiment finished – For the last three months, I have been testing my blood glucose 4X a day, twice in the morning, before breakfast, and the second set before late lunch at about 2 pm. For a number of years, I have been testing twice a day with the OneTouch Reveal monitor, which UnitedHealthcare will no longer support with free test strips. UnitedHealthcare now supports the Contour Next monitor and test strips. For the last three months, the OneTouch had an average 0f 147 mg/dL, while the Contour had an average of 151 mg/dL. 147 converts to an A1C of 6.7%, while 151 is 6.9%. My A1C was checked at the clinic on Nov. 20, and the value was 7.1%. The Contour is slightly more accurate, but both gave more optimistic results than those from the doctor’s office. The A1C is a value over three months so when, and what, you ate on the day you were tested at the doctor’s office has no bearing. The White Coat effect also should not affect the A1C value. I used the last test strip from OneTouch this morning.

Excellent Meter!
Excellent, accurate meter! After years using the Freestyle lite meter, the test strips are no longer on Amazon, and much more expensive now. Freestyle has always been spot on with lab tests. After going through many other brands, meters, and strips which were all inaccurate. This meter and strips nearly or do match the results of my old Freestyle meter. Strips are much less expensive, and ship same day with Prime. Finally found a great, alternative to the old Freestyle meter!!

Accurate!
I want to express my highest recommendation for this blood glucose testing device. It functions as a critical component of my diabetes regimen, enabling me to secure the accurate readings necessary for CGMS calibration (specifically with my Dexcom G7). The fact that this complete solution comes packaged with all necessary consumables (lancets, strips, and lancing pen) is a significant benefit, complemented by its intuitive operation and unbeatable cost-efficiency.

Great Blood Glucose kit
Good meter. It is a replacement for one I just bought that was not accurate. It comes with a small supply of everything you need to start testing. Also comes with a lancet devise where some others don’t. It’s very convenient and accurate. The lancets are 6 different colors, nice for a change

There’s the cheapest that you can get I believe they were $10 at the time. I bought three when I use around the house one in my document bag when I’m out and about and one of my daughters.Love them PS if you download the app, especially on the iPhone like I have you should leave the iPhone and the unit within 6 inches or from your phone, all three will sync on your iPhone app when you set it up. No matter where I’m at, I always got it in my hand.

Solid Product for the Price
In May 2024 my bloodwork had finally entered full-blown diabetes. Thanks to Mounjaro, massive weight loss, and a better diet, my testing is back in the normal range. Blood glucose testing was not ordered by my doctor, at my June checkup he asked if I ever do it. The wearable sensors are supposedly better, but expensive. So I checked product reviews from independent testing labs and decided to try the Ascensia CONTOUR NEXT GEN Blood Glucose Monitoring System.The testing kit had two separate sets of instructions for the lancet and the meter, which was intimidating at first. In reality, this testing kit is super easy to use. The meter activates when you insert a single-use test strip. A disposable lancet is inserted into a spring-loaded pen, and an almost unnoticeable finger prick produces a drop of blood. The test strip soaks up the drop of blood and the monitor processes almost instantly. Just like that. Super easy. The whole set fits into a small carrying case that comes with the starter kit, and would easily fit in a shaving kit, backpack, purse, or suitcase.I have no way to assess the accuracy, but independent testing agencies as well as users of multiple products report it being within a low percentage of deviation. Good enough for my use. Replacement test strips are not expensive, which is appreciated.

Just got the glucometer and followed directions and got a very quick reading. It came with 20 lancelets, 20 test strips, the lancing device, the monitor and a case. Worked perfectly.

This is the one you want. Look for Next “GEN” as this is the newest version.
This one is newer and cheaper than the other one, which was discontinued in 2022.Easy to use and auto-updates to the APP with Bluetooth. I put the APP on my M2ipad because my iphone11 must be too old. I wanted it on my iPad anyway as I use it for everything.
