What we think about this matcha
This matcha is a little finicky, but when you get the temperature right it is a truly versatile, reasonably priced matcha blend that works for tea, lattes and all sorts of crazy recipes. Organic, versatile, and of very decent quality. We recommend this if you’re upgrading from “culinary grade” matcha. With a richer taste, coupled with some sweetness and umami. This is our go to for an “everyday blend”. Nice clean tasting matcha that we use for matcha tea and lattes without sweetener. A little too grassy and bitter for enjoying neat, but great for sweetened matcha lattes that do not compromise matcha flavor. Our Masters Collection comprises higher grade, sometimes rarer matcha we personally love, though some may not be suitable for beginners due to their increased complexity.

Choose this if:
You are nervous about “grassy/bitter”notes in matcha and prefer it milder. You want a quality matcha without the grassy/bitter notes that tastes good, but also organic. You only make matcha at home now because cafes can’t get it right. You’re very sensitive to bitter notes. You like some sweetener in your matcha latte but still want punchy matcha flavors. You prefer variety and seek a deeper understanding of the different tastes and flavors matcha can provide.

Tasting Notes
Smooth and mild, with low bitterness. Roasty, cacao notes with low bitterness. Naturally sweet, with some umami and low bitterness. A smooth, mild flavor with a fragrant aroma and no bitterness. Robust, earthy matcha flavor that’s smooth with moderate bitterness. From nutty, malt-like umami to floral and refreshing. Refer to individual blend for more information.

Here are some tips

If you’re new to matcha – start with either our Superior Ceremonial Blend or Organic Ceremonial Blend if you prefer an organic product. They are beginner-friendly blends that provide versatility and a great taste. These also work great for lattes! If you’ve sample many different matcha, you may find that you have “outgrown” the beginner friendly blends. For an enjoyable matcha tea, try our Fragrant Yame Blend. It’s sweetness and smooth texture will make for a pleasing experience. If you are an advanced matcha enthusiast, do also consider try our Master’s Collection matcha. Our favourite is the Masters Collection Chiran Harvest matcha. If you intend to drink matcha as a caffeinated pick-me-up for sleepy afternoons, why not try it as a cold brew. That simply means cold water and matcha mixed together. All our blends work well for this, but our Fragrant Yame matcha provides the mildest, smoothest flavors.

bamboo whisk matcha chasenbamboo whisk matcha chasen Benefits of matcha

Matcha provides a focused, mellow energy boost without jitters or the crash you normally expect from coffee.

This is due to naturally present L-theanine (an amino acid) and caffeine in matcha.

Matcha is also high in antioxidants, with a greater concentration compared to regular green teas.

Understanding matcha

Why do we describe matcha as “blends”?

Matcha is made from shade-grown tea leaves that is milled into a fine powder. The final taste of matcha depends on a tea master who will select different tea leaves for their taste attributes.

The tea master “blends” these leaves together to accentuate certain flavors so that he can achieve a final result that the customer will find enjoyable.

The overall flavor objectives will vary by region. The classical “Kyoto” style matcha prizes balance and umami. In the south of Japan, many tea masters are known for producing lighter, sweeter matcha. Between good matcha, there is no single “best” flavor. It is a matter of individual preference. As the world learns to appreciate matcha, we expect more innovative flavour profiles to emerge.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. I’m new to matcha. Which blend should I choose? We recommend you to start with either the Organic First Spring Blend or Superior Blend. The Organic First Spring Blend is smooth, low in bitterness with a slight umami. The Superior Blend has a smooth, balanced flavor with moderate umami. Ideal for beginners and daily drinking. Both blends are versatile and excellent for making matcha lattes.

2. Is the bamboo whisk or electric whisk better for making matcha? It really depends on what you prefer. If you’re looking for a beautiful microfoam, the bamboo whisk (chasen) is a great choice. With a little practice, it’s simple to use and gives you more control over frothing and mixing. On the other hand, if convenience is key, an electric whisk is super handy. It works especially well for smaller servings—like mixing about 1 teaspoon of matcha into at least 4 ounces of liquid. Both options have their perks, so you can choose what works best for your matcha-making style!

3. How many servings of matcha latte can I make with 40g/1.4oz of matcha? We define one serving as 2 grams (about 1 teaspoon), but how much matcha you use per drink really depends on your taste and preference. If you’re just starting out, 2 grams is a great amount for a latte—it’s smooth and flavorful without being too strong. With this amount, you’ll get about 20 servings from a tin. For seasoned matcha lovers, you might prefer a bolder flavor by using 4 grams per latte. This will, of course, give you fewer servings per tin, but it’s perfect for those who enjoy a stronger matcha kick.

4. I’m worried about radiation and heavy metals. Do you test for radiation and heavy metals in your matcha? We rigorously test every crop of matcha for potential hazards, including radiation and heavy metals. These tests are essential for our factories to maintain their food safety certifications and licenses, which are required for continued operations. Additionally, the Japanese government conducts its own independent radiation testing on all food products. The results have consistently been negative, and they’re publicly available in English on the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare’s website.

5. What if I don’t like it? We’re here to help! Preparing matcha properly can make all the difference in bringing out its best flavor, and we’re happy to guide you with recipes, tips, and techniques. If your product didn’t meet your expectations, no worries—just reach out to us through the “contact seller” option. To help us resolve your concern quickly, it would be great if you could send us pictures of the product and its batch code.If you can also share how you’ve been preparing your matcha—your recipe and method—we’d be happy to provide personalized advice to help you get the most out of your matcha experience. We’ll do everything we can to ensure you’re satisfied and enjoying every sip!

6. How long can I keep my matcha for? You can store matcha for up to 12 months in an opaque, airtight container from the date it’s ground. Once opened, we recommend enjoying it within 1–2 months for the best flavor. To keep your matcha as fresh as possible, it’s a good idea to store it in the fridge.

7. How fresh are Naoki Matcha’s products? We ship our matcha in small batches to ensure freshness, and our products typically have at least 6–9 months of shelf life remaining. Amazon handles delivery using the “First-In-First-Out” method to keep things as fresh as possible. That said, occasional mishaps can happen. If you receive a product with less-than-ideal shelf life or a damaged bag due to delivery issues, don’t worry—just reach out to us! After a quick review, we’ll be happy to provide a replacement and make things right.

8. What does “ceremonial-grade” really mean? “Ceremonial-grade” doesn’t have a regulated definition, but for us, it means matcha that’s high-quality enough to enjoy on its own. Save for our “All Purpose Culinary Grade Matcha”, we would consider our entire lineup to meet our criteria for “ceremonial grade”. When it comes to matcha, the price usually reflects the quality. Higher-grade matcha typically has a smoother mouthfeel, less bitterness, and more umami, which is why it’s priced higher. It’s all about finding the right balance between taste and budget for your matcha journey!

Premium Taste, Beautiful Aroma – A Matcha Lover’s Dream
Naoki’s Fragrant Yame Blend is hands-down one of the best matcha powders I’ve tried. As soon as you open the pouch, you’re greeted by a fresh, grassy aroma with subtle sweet undertones—it’s clear this is a high-quality ceremonial-grade matcha. The flavor is smooth, slightly umami with no bitterness, and it froths up beautifully for lattes or traditional whisked matcha. I love using it for my morning ritual—pairs perfectly with oat milk or just hot water. It’s not the cheapest option out there, but the quality justifies the price. If you care about taste, texture, and authenticity, this is worth every cent.✅ Pros:Rich, smooth flavor with zero bitternessVibrant green color and fine textureEasy to whisk and frothComes from a reputable, single-origin source❌ Cons:Slightly pricier than culinary blends (but worth it for quality)

Excellent ceremonial grade matcha. Yame Blend.
I drink only ceremonial grade matcha and I usually drink it straight with nothing added. I love to drink both Taste of Kyoto Reserve and also Element matcha and Wilderness Poets ceremonial grade. This Naoki is a delightful matcha. I ordered the Fragrent Yame Blend. It is rich and creamy, sweet. There is a slight grassy bitterness, but I think I make it strong so that might not show up if made weaker. Beautiful bright green color. I hope it shows in the photos, I did not use a filter so the green that you see is just what it looks like in the sunlight. Instant high energy boost. Very fresh. I think the $25 I payed is a good price for this matcha.

    AMAZING MATCHA
If I could recommend one blend from Naoki Matcha, it would be the fragrant Yame blend! If you like a naturally sweet and nutty matcha, this one is for you. This is the second brand I’ve tried that uses matcha from the Yame region in Japan and I like this one better. The scent has a natural sweetness that almost resembles white chocolate and slight hints of earthy umami as well. Microfoams beautifully and is lovely on its own as well as with any sweetener of choice. Loved it the first time around and this is my second tin and I will continue to purchase it in the future. Best value too, you get 40 grams of matcha for $26.99 and generally you only get 20-30 grams at a higher price point.

    Very smooth, but lacks richness
This matcha is very smooth, in both flavor and texture. There is basically no bitterness or astringency to found, it sifts very easily, and wisks into the water wonderfully, creating a nice silky liquid. The one thing I noted when drinking it thin (Usucha was the lack of depth in flavor. There was some sweetness, naturally from the tea leaves, but no hint of umami, no nutty flavor, the vegetal flavor was also very light. It was very weak tasting, almost watery. I did try this as a thicker tea, not quite Koicha, but close. It was still not bitter, so that was good, the natural sweetness increased, as did the vegetal flavor, like that of fresh pea pods. This matcha does not have the savory umami flavors that some others have, which can be a good thing. Depending on my mood, I actually prefer the sweetness of this. But, being so weak is what prevents me from fully loving it. Having to use double the matcha to achieve the any richness of flavor means I’m spending twice the amount for this matcha in the end.

    Mellow, balanced, great price point
My husband travels to Japan occasionally for work, and I requested he bring back a quality matcha in order to have a standard to gage other brands by. As a beginner, I had tried a couple of low quality/inexpensive brands to see how they were. And I never wanted to taste them again. This was the perfect opportunity to understand why people get excited about matcha. A colleague from Japan helped him find a reputable shop and he brought back a high quality matcha for me. I drank it straight, prepared (to my best ability) with the translated directions from the shop, and I sat down and really enjoyed that bowl of matcha.Although I have not committed to opening the second packet that he purchased (for savoring purposes), and therefore have not done a side-by-side comparison between this product and my “standard,” I can say that the Naoki Yame Blend Ceremonial Grade Matcha is an excellent blend for its price. As someone who is working toward opening a coffee/tea house, this matcha really is delicious, mellow (not bitter/sea-weedy), slightly sweet on its own, and I enjoy it straight or with frothed milk…I don’t even add syrup, it is just pleasant. If you are looking for an everyday matcha that is enjoyable in multiple forms, this one is a great option.

    The Best Latte Matcha
My favorite everyday matcha!! I little more fragrant and strong so it is the best for lattes. I used to order from the site but now I can get it faster from amazon. Great size for how much you pay!

    Tiny stems in matcha powder
I’ve bought a few times from Naoki of this blend before without this issue but my last batch had tiny stem bits within the powder so the quality is definitely going downhill unfortunately. I like the taste though but good quality matcha shouldn’t have stems in it.
